Two new motherboards are rumored to be in production to combat the nagging problem of red ringed deaths to a lot of 360 owners, new and old. Brought about by Jake at 8bitjoystick.com, the same blogger responsible for calling out the divorce between Bungie and Microsoft, this rumor is getting a lot of attention. The 5th and 6th gen 360’s are being developed at Microsoft HQ in Redmond and are codenamed Opus and Valhalla.
The Opus motherboard is described as a mix of working innards cannibalized from current red-ringed consoles. This motherboard includes a 90nm GPU and a 65nm CPU. These chipsets are then stuck on the old Falcon motherboard and massaged into the original Xenon case. Because of this, whichever console is (un)lucky enough to get the Opus upgrade will lack an HDMI port. The recycling of parts is said to make use of all the dead 360s (quoted in “the millions”) Microsoft has in stock.
The Valhalla motherboard is blogged to be the last configuration of the console and it’s in the early stages of creation. It will include a 65nm CPU and 65nm GPU on a unified super chip. This setup will require less cooling than present models, resulting in quieter operation during use. And since it runs cooler, it should last longer.
This 360 fan sure hopes so.
