HD-DVD is dead, we all know it and Blu-Ray faces a new danger in the form of digital downloads. But, there is still enough rumor mongering and news about HD-DVD to make it worthwhile. The latest report says the Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on will be getting a huge price cut.
This information regards a “new” Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive which is said to cost $49.99. Whether the “source” means new as in a new model or new design is not clear, it could be “new” just because of the price cut.
Ars Technica says the source has been accurate about predicting past events as well. Announcements of the Xbox 360 arcade, 40GB PS3 and HDMI equipped Xbox 360 systems from said source were all accurate.
This may offer some competition for Sony after all, if only for a few months. Those not “in the know” about the format war may actually buy this thing only to find out that HD-DVD production will be ceasing by the end of March.
No new HD-DVD content will be released after that time. Essentially this would be a waste of $49 perfectly good dollars. A bargain, but still a waste.
That $49 is better spent towards a game or Blu-Ray title. Then again, the company needs to find a way to clear out all those useless units.
